10 Tips for First Time Cruisers

During a recent conversation on twitter with other travellers and travel professionals (Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 pm est – called #tni, or travellers’ night in), the question was posed as to what advice you’d give to first time cruisers.  I suggested several items, as did other experienced cruisers and cruise travel agents.  I thought the tips raised were worth sharing with others.

So, here are 10 tips for first time cruisers:

1. work with an experienced travel agent – it’s important to have an advocate in your corner

2.  1st time cruisers should understand that there is a ship for everyone and every taste, a travel agent can help make the best match! (thx theflaggagency)

3. pay the bucks to upgrade to a balcony cabin – treat yourself right (especially important if you have smaller children, and travelling somewhere like Alaska – get the view from your room, instead of looking for elbow room on the sunrise deck – kids can go in and out of cabin)

4. consider travelling on an all inclusive cruise line like Regent – when you add everything in, you will pay a comparable price for a much larger (likely balcony) cabin, with fewer people onboard, and definitely a more luxurious experience

5. the great thing about a cruise is you can do as little or as much as you feel – it’s your vacation

6. bring the Dramamine; leave the Hawaiian shirt at home. (thx ieatmypigeon)

7. make sure you go with FUN people – it could be close quarters with no escape LOL (thx BeehiveBlog)

8.  tip your crew and talk to them, they’re on that boat for 6+ months at a time, usually working 16-18 hour days. (thx glutenfreewife)

9,  if you insist on making your flight arrangements the day of embarkation…. KNOW you could MISS THE BOAT (thx TravelDesigned)

10. bring half the clothes and twice the money you think you will need! (Thx CruiseMuse)

And, of course, if you need assistance booking that first cruise, give me a call!
